Streets of Oldentown

Welcome to the Streets of Oldentown landing page!

This is a small-scale skirmish campaign between five players, each with a highly personalized warband that seeks to gain fame in the streets of Puffington's infamous Oldentown District. How does it work? Let's take a look.

This campaign has come to its conclusion, bringing victory to Blardah's Boner Brothers!

This is the map of Puffington Empire's capital city, or more precisely its Oldentown District. This area is one of the oldest in the capital, its foundations having been laid in the early years of this magnificent empire. There will be a more detailed background exploration for this map in the future, and it will be linked to this post for easy access.

The map is divided into 28 regions, 2 of which have been marked as Key Locations (Steelyard and Goat's End Inn). There are also five Special Regions, which confer campaign bonuses to the warband that controls them, as well as an extra region called the Oldentown Castle.

At the start of the campaign each warband randomly generates itself a 3rd Key Location which is kept secret. Once a player controls both Key Locations and his own Secret Key Location, or has assembled a warband worth 100 renown in total, he may attempt the Oldentown Castle scenario. This is a bonus scenario played against any of the other players. If the attempting player is victorious, he is declared the winner of the entire campaign!

The campaign system is based on the Age of Sigmar Skirmish rules, with some house-ruled tweaks on missile/spell ranges and the Wound-values of Heroes, as well as the addition of an evolving campaign map.

Below are the basic rules for "Puffington Bouts" and the map's Special Regions:

The campaign progress will be tracked here in the form of updated maps and short descriptions of Oldentown's events. There are also links to narrative battlereports and Puffington Post articles!

The seventh week of the Harvest Season began with shady activity in Puffington's Oldentown district. The staff of Puffington Muffins & Puddings bakery tried to intercept a band of ghouls smuggling strange (and smelly) chests from the old graveyard in the shadow of the northern city wall. Along with his summoned daemons, Chief-Baker Tchednik confronted the flesh-eaters in the Warehouse block, but was forced to withdraw under the numerical superiority of Ghoul King Blardah's court. Bloody hand-marks on the walls of the stockhouses now betoken the new ruler of this block.

Upon hearing rumours of some mysterious contraband entering the city, Investigator Roderick Usher assembled his fanatic followers of the Brotherhood of the Absent Flame and set off to investigate. They discovered stacks of un-tolled wares in the corners of Ashensquare after the tollhouse clerks had left after the day's work. While rummaging through the boxes and barrels, Usher and his henchmen were busted by Puffington Muffins & Puddings Militia who were also there to check the wares. Both parties demanded to know what the other one was doing out so late in the evening, and neither seemed content to back off, so there was a brief fight that ended unresolved as the city's nightwatch appeared on the scene. The wares remain unsearched.

Intrigued by the wares left at Ashensquare, two warbands were drawn to the the park in the darkness. The Guild of the Dead, That Live came to the scene an hour or so after sundown, only to find the Puffington Muffins & Puddings Militia carrying the crates they'd been driven away from the night before. The Guilders had a swift and bitter streetfight with the Militia, trying to stop them from escaping with the wares, but eventually could not hold back the tide of Horrors in the shadowy alleys. The bakery gang now command respect in the Ashensquare block, and their wandering handcart stall has announced a new regular stop in the area.

There was scrimmage at the Sky-Port when a shipment of weapons was brought into the city and left suspiciously outside one of the import dock warehouses. Investigator Roderick Usher led his Unofficials into the port to seek out this cargo and to requisition it for his private office's use. Unfortunately they ran into a flock of ghouls under the leadership of Ghoul King Blardah, who set upon the humans with unbound ferocity. All of the Brothers were badly wounded, and Father Eli was arrested by the City Watch, but still Usher managed to stave off the attackers and reclaim the shipment. Now he has to go and bail his friend out to enjoy their victory – the Sky-Port now bears the mark of Usher's Unofficials!

Mark Chobbin of Chobbin's Chamber Port & Bits in southern Oldentown had lost his butique's coffer as it had been on its way to the bank, carried by his nephew. Several posters had been dealt out into the streets to encourage people to find the chest and bring it back, with a promise of reward. Usher's Unofficials took up the task and set out to find the coffer, but ran into the Merry Muskrateers just as they stumbled upon the abandoned strongbox. A brief swordplay ensued in which the Investigator's men were run down by the flamboyant, and remarkably skilled, ratmen. Mark Chobbin rewarded the Muskrateers with a precious family heirloom and his butique now stands under their protection.

The Refugee Camp just outside the eastern city gate saw some action in the cold morning mists. Chief Baker Tchednik had gone walking outside the city walls with three militiamen, to assess the security of the camp of the poor refugees, when a mob of ghouls and rather unhealthy-looking wolves led by Ghoul King Blardah attacked them out in the open. The short fight ended up with the members of the Puffington Muffins & Puddings Militia at the Traderdorf infirmary along with their leader. The refugees now live in constant fear of Blardah's Boner Brothers, as the City Watch hasn't been able to catch up with them yet.

With the Oldentown District Council Election currently ongoing, Candidate Ruffles travels outside the city walls to hold a campaign rally at the Goat's End Inn voting stall. Although the brave and popular canine is protected by a band of valiant Muskrateers, the Boner Brothers of Ghoul King Blardah appear on the scene and rush for the urns containing the local votes. After a fierce struggle the ghouls finally overcome the Muskrateers protecting the locals' rightfully cast votes, replacing them with new, identical urns. Suddenly Candidate Cletus Hillwilly soars to the top of the election lists with a massive injection of favourable votes.

Right after the city's holidays, a peculiar incident took place at the Oldentown Guildhall. Blardah's Boner Brothers rushed into the recent District Council Election's vote recount that the Guildhall clerks were working on, but luckily the brave Puffington Muffins & Puddings Militia  happened to be nearby and ran to their aid. The brutal fight eventually turned tipped to the favour of the ghouls, as the Militia was forced to retreat from the scene. Once more the minions of Ghoul King Blardah managed to take control of a handful of election urns, and the Guildhall now remains under their "protection".

With the elections now well in the past, the new District Council is working on its very first initiatives. The shady conflicts in the streets keep running on, however, as Investigator Roderick Usher receives a lead that something fishy might be afoot at the district Stables. Indeed, as Usher's Unofficials spread out into the hollow husks of the abandoned townhouses surrounding the stables, King Blardah's Boner Brothers appear from the dead of night, carrying chests they would fill with delicious horse-meat. Sporadic fighting erupts on the alleys and amidst the empty houses as Usher's henchmen strive to push the ghouls back, but in the end they are overrun and the King's retinue makes it off into the night with their coffers full of fresh food!

Knowing the Oldentown elections had been interfered with, the Merry Muskrateers decided to get their hands on some evidence to be delivered to the city officials. Through several nights of interviews and lengthy discussions they were able to compile a letter with first-hand accounts and witness testimonies that would surely gain the attention of the powerful. However, as they were making their way through the Grumblebeard District with their newly acquired evidence, they were set upon by King Blardah and his court of ghouls and other nasties of the night. The Muskrateers were scattered into the streets and alleyways after a brief skirmish, and the letter of evidence was lost in the fighting.

Upset by the corpse-eaters being able to rampage around at will, the merry ratmen then made their way to the Rat-Catcher's Livery Hall in order to have a word with the local pest control. Alas, as they emerged onto the livery hall block they were attacked again, by the same band of ghouls and nightly terrors as before. The cursed things had nearly a third of Oldentown under their control already, including Grumblebeard District and the Rat-Catcher's Livery Hall!

Is there anyone powerful enough to stop the ghouls from dominating the night-life on the streets anymore?

Night fell upon the city of Puffington once more, but the Oldentown district was far from quiet this evening. What began as a peaceful sunset and gentle hustle of people returning from day's work, descended into bloody madness when Blardah's Boner Brothers let loose a band of bandits, ruffians and ne'er-do-wells into the streets of the district! A maelstrom of violence engulfed the yards and alleys as the hired rascals caused problems all across Oldentown, robbing stores, breaking into warehouses and beating up anyone who they got their dirty hands on.

Under the cover of this distraction, King Blardah led his ghouls on a daring mission... to overtake the Oldentown Castle at the heart of the district! The City Watch were caught unawares, many of their number laid low even before they could fight back and try to keep the situation under control. Usher's Unofficials were nowhere to be seen, the entire enterprise still licking its wounds from the last beating it took from the undead. The Guild of the Dead, That Live had not been heard of in months now. Only two factions took steps to thwart King Blardah's plans; The Merry Muskrateers hurried into the Castle ahead of the ghouls, trying to deliver a warning to the garrison, while the stoic Puffington Muffins & Puddings Militia took to the streets themselves, starting to sort out the various villains prowling the alleys.

The castle garrison replied with all the haste and grace of a drunken thundertusk, eventually granting the Muskrateers' plea of sendind a patrol down into the streets to see what was what. Meanwhile, the brave bakery militia of Chief Baker Tchednik was fighting against overwhelming odds as the ghouls and their human lackeys drew ever closer to the castle.

Despite the combined efforts of the City Watch, the Castle Garrison, the Muskrateers and the Puffington Muffins & Puddings Militia the ghouls overcame all resistance and stormed the Oldentown Castle, claiming ownership of the entire district and condemning Oldentowners to live in absolute chaos for days to come. With the local law enforcement laid low, it falls to the Puffington Cabinet to mount an operation to reclaim the district... but that is a story for another time.
