Myrkrvollr Holdfast

 Greetings!

Remember this amazing piece of art drawn by Baron Klatz during the Twilight Prince campaign? It depicts strange tower constructions found by a Puffington scout in the shadowy forests of Ulgu, the Realm in which an entire regiment of imperial soldiers was lost during the campaign.

A ramshackle tower pieced together from all available resources, including old wargear and banners of the lost regiment. The scout didn't live long enough to tell the tale of these towers himself, but one of his colleagues found him dead on the forest floor with a crumpled piece of parchment in one cold hand. It turned out to be a rough sketch of these constructions, ready to be taken back to the Puffington Empire for closer inspection.

Well guess what, I took such a liking to Klatz's sketch of the Ulgumgi Towers that I decided to give it some additional dimensions...

I took a couple of bars of foam, glued them together and drew the shapes of the stones and boards with a ballpoint pen. Then I rolled across the surface with a crumpled ball of aluminium foil (to give it rougher texture) before applying three thin coats of watered-down PVA glue to bind it all in. Then I basecoated it black and drybrushed the rest of the colours on, and here's the result!

I tried to remain faithful to the original artwork, with snake-staff banner-poles and rough stones raised on the roof for makeshift crenellations. I also added some bits and pieces like stools, tables, a crossbow and some actual wooden planks for doors.

I wonder if he's the one who shot the scout...
This tower represents one of the many watchposts that guard the hidden passages to the settlement of Myrkrvollr, a walled Ulgumgi town in the dark depths of the forests of Ulgu. Now my Hirdmen and Trappers can keep watch on their lands, safe from the attentions of every by-passing group of warriors!

And here we are, an actual game-ready terrain piece inspired by Baron Klatz's brilliant art! Many thanks to him for coming up with this concept of hidden ramshackle buildings raised by the men of the lost Puffington regiment.

I will be posting some WIPs of this project later, so keep an eye out if you're interested in the process by which this tower was built!
